capital system to judge the resilience
of the world's largest banks. He said
the system is unreliable and contributed to the 2008 financial crisis.
Risk-based capital requirements
rules establish a minimum requirement for reserves or regulatory
capital for financial institutions that
should ensure that each institution
has enough capital on hand to sustain
operating losses. See it like cash
money under the mattress, but for
banks and financial institutions.
Under the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall
Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, each bank is required
to have a total risk-based capital
ratio of 8%, and a tier 1 risk-based
capital ratio of 4%.
Tier 1 is the bank's investment
portfolio. Total capital refers to the
difference between a bank's assets
and liabilities, meaning how much
it has in its vaults vs. how much it
has loaned or invested. For example,
one million in capital loans would
require $80,000 to remain in the
bank, to, so to speak, cover its butt.
The deciders
One obvious question is who decides
- and measures and counts - the
actual percent of capital that each
bank holds? This is Hoenig's concern. He said the existing system
"too easily allows banks to conceal
risk and amplify leverage." He also
said the system degrades bank management's responsibility and inflates
the role of regulators, meaning the
persons who apportion bank capital.
After reading Hoenig's comments,
financial advisor Simon Black, in
his "Sovereign Man" newsletter,
said any giant mess in the financial
system could cause asset prices to
collapse, as they did in 2008, and
only banks with ample capital will
be able to withstand the crisis. He
said those with inadequate capital
will fail.
Hoenig said the present risk-based
system allows regulators, and in
some cases the banks themselves,
to assign "weights" to different
classes of assets, based on their
calculated guess about future risks.
He said, "Investors also look on
these risk weights as an endorsement of financial safety. But as we
learned from the 2008 crisis, this
measure too easily allows banks to
conceal risk and amplify leverage."
Is he describing Minsky's euphoric
stage?
Black said one of Hoenig's major
points is that bank accounting
methods allow them to live in a
pretend world where their assets
carry zero risks. Black said that banks
today, instead of holding sub-prime
mortgages as they did in 2008,
hold subprime government bonds.
Mid-summer financial reports
say worldwide government bond
investments amount to approximately $11.7 trillion, many with
negative yields. n

Y
ou're surely offering magnetic and other straightforward signage to your commercial-vehicle customers
- a contractor with a new van or truck who needs
vinyl or magnetic signs on the truck sides and back.
You can offer additional products that protect and
enhance that customer's new vehicle - window tint
and protective film - which are surprisingly easy
to apply and can add profit areas to routine vehicle
signage jobs. Window tinting may seem outside your
comfort zone, but it's easy to install and add profits.
How? Study window-tinting tutorials on YouTube.
Your shop already has a cutting plotter and you know
how to apply vinyl with watery soap and a squeegee.
The process? Download window-tint templates and
use vehicle-tint software to establish (and nest) the
pattern, and then load the media into your cutting
plotter and cut the tint to size.

Top vinyl-media manufacturers produce windowtint material, and it may be available through your
sign-supply reseller. Also, glass is a perfect application
surface, so you may find it's easier to apply window
tint than vinyl signage.
Another upsell is vehicle paint-protection film, i.e., a
clear, durable, adhesive film that protects vehicle fronts
from road rash and bugs. It's a clear, protective coating
that's similar to a vehicle wrap. However, the installation
process involves a heat gun for stretching the film, so
the application is more difficult than window tints.
Protective-media rolls are expensive, but you can
command a good return. It's an ideal upsell, and
the protective film will safeguard the customer's wrap
investment.
Give these concepts some thought. Window tint
and protective wraps may be profitable additions to
your product line.
