Selling a city on all-aluminum channel letters instead of a low-budget refurb.
F all the things Orlando is
known for, bridges really
wouldn't be among them.
But in this case, one of
our highway bridges gets much more
attention than any other bridge in
the city. Well, at least now it does.
Funded by President Dwight D.
Eisenhower's Federal-Aid Highway
Act of 1956, construction of the
$42.2 million Interstate 4 began in
1958 to accommodate 70,000 vehicles
per day through the downtown

Orlando area. Built in six segments,
it sprawled 132 miles southwest from
Daytona Beach on the east coast of
Florida across the state in 1965 to
Tampa on the west coast. Downtown
Orlando now handles over 200,000
vehicles a day. Currently, the 21-mile
Orlando section is undergoing a
five-year, $2.3 billion reconstruction
as 1,000 people a day move to the
Sunshine State.
I-4's run across the state is speckled
with various bridges from smaller,
intersecting highways that run above
the interstate. One in particular, Conroy
Rd., spans 600 ft. over I-4 between the
attractions (Universal Studios, Disney,
etc.) and the entry into Orlando's city
limits.
Over 10 years ago, the city installed
5-ft.-tall dimensional letters that spell
ORLANDO and mounted them to the
bridge safety fence. These dimensional
letters were constructed of hand
laid fiberglass backed with plywood
for mounting. They also featured
individual LED bulbs embedded in
silicone around the letter perimeters
to form a dotted outline of the letters
for nighttime visibility.
Last month, the City of Orlando
contacted Media 1 (M1) to provide
them a quote to refurbish those
letters. The Florida sun had beaten
them to death and they desperately
needed some attention. Meeting
