noted that although graphic design
has transitioned from the workbench
to the computer screen, it's still moving
forward. He wrote, "We're on the verge
of another revolution, as artificial
intelligence and machine learning
turn the graphic design field on its
head again." According to Tselentis,
the new vision is that websites will
make themselves, that software will
evaluate your text content, line of

business and imagery, and spit out
finished pages without your having to
lift a finger. He said such technology
will arrive on the web first, but print
design will soon follow.
Print design is graphic design,
which for years was identified as
design for print reproduction with
"graphic," according to Merriam
Webster's online dictionary, relating
to printing. However, the American
Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) describes it more idealistically: "Design
that's to be experienced in an instant
is the easiest to recognize. Designers
arrange type, form, and image on
posters, advertisements, packages,
and other printed matter, as well as
information visualizations and graphics
for newspapers and magazines." The
organization says graphic design is
also known as communication design:
the art and practice of planning and
projecting ideas and experiences
with visual and textual content.
Although a first cousin, sign design
isn't really graphic design. Sign designers use similar software to graphic
designers; however, sign-design
processes have kept up with the
larger graphic design industry. The
commercial print industry market
is roughly $60 billion annually; signmaking is 16% of that.
I'll add that much of sign-design
work also considers structure design,
