In retail, change is the name of the game. In an effort to stay relevant,
materials are frequently changed to appeal to what's right now.
And much like going through the boxed-up sweaters in your closet,
you might find that right now is surprisingly similar to back then.
While wood, tile and stone planks are proving to be the little black
dress for retail interiors, what's changed recently is their usage: "What
we are seeing more of right now are chevron and herringbone patterns,"
says Diana Revkin, managing director, retail, TPG Architecture (New
York). "And a lot more of the retro, industrial, early 20th Centuryinspired patterns."
But why have these styles returned?
"I think it's driven by that search [for] authenticity and a connection
to history, and not just being ultramodern and tech-inspired in the way
we saw five years ago," explains Revkin. "There's a desire to connect to
roots, and I think that means reaching back to the nostalgic feeling of
earlier spaces."
Of course, what's most important at the end of the day, she says, is
brand consistency. So by all means, update your wardrobe - just be sure
