Interventions Reduce Wrong-Patient
Orders in NICUs

and Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University Medical
Center in New York, and colleagues, reviewed more than
850,000 NICU orders and more than 3.5 million non-NICU
pediatric orders over the seven-year study period.
"Implementation of a combined ID reentry intervention
and distinct naming convention greatly reduced this risk" of
wrong-patient orders, the study adds.

Increasing Acceptance of Pediatric Telemedicine
The majority

have used
telemedicine or
plan to use it for
their child within
the next year.

A

majority of caregivers plan to use telemedicine for their child within the next year for a
limited range of uses.
According to "Telemedicine in America 2017: Parents Use of Virtual Visits," published by
Nemours Children's Health System, 64 percent of 500 U.S. caregivers, ages 21 and older, surveyed
online say they have used telemedicine or plan to use it for their child within the next year. Caregivers
who had already used telemedicine indicate the experience was better than an in-person visit (74.7
percent), primarily because of convenience, after-hours availability and immediacy. However, among
parents who already tried telemedicine, 97.5 percent say it's preferable to an in-person visit.
Most parents said they would use telemedicine for common childhood conditions such as cold
and flu (58 percent), pink eye (51 percent), rash (48 percent) and well-child visits (41 percent). Also,
parents indicated they would never use it for diabetes (53 percent), asthma (43 percent) ear pain/
infections (37 percent) or ADHD (36 percent).
Half of respondents (50.4 percent) are comfortable with a nurse practitioner performing an online
visit, while 32.9 percent said maybe and 16.7 percent would not accept it. Among those whose child
already had an online visit, the support increases to over 70 percent willing to see a nurse practitioner.
Since Nemours' 2014 survey, use of online pediatric visits has grown 125 percent, and parents' awareness of the
virtual services has increased 88 percent. "Even though use of telemedicine is climbing slowly, our findings show
that we are on the cusp of a breakthrough in adoption as families are becoming more interested and accepting of
receiving care virtually," Gina Altieri, senior vice president of Nemours, says in a related article in mHealthWatch.

rong-patient
orders are
significantly
higher in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs)
than in non-NICU pediatric units, but specific
interventions can reduce
risk more than 60 percent.
"Evaluating Serial
Strategies for Preventing Wrong-Patient Orders in the
NICU," a quality improvement study in Pediatrics, assessed
the effectiveness of an ID re-entry intervention combined
with a distinct naming convention for newborns to reduce
these errors. The study used non-NICU pediatric units for
comparison.
"At baseline, wrong-patient orders were more frequent
in NICU than in non-NICU pediatric units (117.2 vs. 74.9 per
100,000 orders, respectively)," the study says, noting that the
ID re-entry intervention (re-entering patient identifiers before
placing orders) reduced error frequency in NICUs to 60.2
per 100,000 orders, or a 48.7 percent reduction. Combined
with the distinct naming intervention (e.g., "Wendysgirl"),
the decrease in errors was even greater - 45.6 per 100,000
orders, or a 61.1 percent reduction from baseline.
A related article from HealthDay News notes that in
the study, Jason Adelman, of the departments of Medicine

Re-entry intervention
combined with a
distinct naming
convention for
newborns greatly
reduced these errors.
