AT THE BEDSIDE

* Summit was next step after CCSC
statement on burnout
* Daylong summit focused on
resilience, healthy work
environments, wellness
* Featured 50 experts

"C

ritical Care Societies
Collaborative [CCSC] National Summit
on Prevention & Management of
Burnout," on sccm.org, describes a
summit featuring 50 experts in areas
such as integrative medicine, nursing
and academia.
Presentations at the daylong
summit, in Naperville, Illinois,
focused on "programs at various
institutions treating burnout, the
state of the science, and reflections
on the national conversation" on
resilience, healthy work environ-

National Summit on
Identification, Prevention
and Management of Burnout
ments and wellness. Participants spent
most of the day in "breakout groups
to address prevention, identification,
and strategies for raising awareness
and finding solutions to addressing
burnout in critical care clinicians."
The summit was a next step after
the CCSC released a statement on
burnout in critical care personnel.
The statement defines burnout as "an
imbalance of personal characteristics
of the employee and work-related
issues or other organizational factors."
During the keynote presentation,
Meredith Mealer, assistant professor
at University of Colorado School of
Medicine, "highlighted organizational strategies to reduce burnout,
including addressing the work environment through shorter rotations and

reduced shifts
with direct
patient care,
improving
communication with
hospital leadership and others." She
also spoke on the "value of individual
strategies such as stress management
techniques and coping skills that build
psychological and moral resilience."
"Awareness is becoming much
more front and center. In the past,
people were having these feelings and
frustrations, but didn't know what
to call it. Now, instead of it being a
silent epidemic, it's coming more into
the forefront," says Vicki Good, vice
president of quality/safety at Mercy
Springfield Communities, a healthcare
system in the Midwest, and AACN past
president.
CCSC is composed of the Society
of Critical Care Medicine, American
Thoracic Society, American College of
Chest Physicians and AACN. d

ecause tragedies that play out in hospitals affect healthcare personnel, in addition to patients and families, hospitals are establishing programs to help employees cope.

"As Health Workers Deal With Mass Shootings and Fires, More Hospitals Are Looking to Help Them Cope," in the
Los Angeles Times, notes that studies suggest repeatedly dealing with trauma leads to more anxiety in healthcare
personnel, as well as more drinking and other negative coping behaviors. Years of helping patients in stressful situations can
lead to burnout, compassion fatigue and symptoms similar to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Hospital Programs Help
Employees Cope With
Traumatic Events

Jessica Thomas, clinical director - emergency department, USC Verdugo
Hills Hospital, California, started a program to address secondary
trauma. She says that caregivers who don't talk about their experiences
"might shut down and stop bonding with patients," adding that "healthcare leaders need to create a place where workers can say they're not up
for a certain task and be met with, 'It's OK, I still respect you and I think
you're awesome.'"

St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California, initiated a program called Code Compassion. Employees who feel stressed can call
the hospital operator, who asks a staff member to bring them water, cookies and pretzels, and gives them a few minutes to
talk about their feelings.
North Hawaii Community Hospital, Waimea, launched Code Lavender, which offers employees aromatherapy, reiki and
pet therapy. The program was named after the Code Blue alert, but it references an essential oil that promotes relaxation.
Initially designed for patients, the program was soon expanded to include staff.
In addition, Northeastern University's Institute on Urban Health Research and Practice, Boston, developed the Vicarious
Trauma Toolkit, which includes a repository of nearly 500 resources, primarily for organizations to address the work-related
trauma that first responders, social workers and others may have after tragic events. d
