Carrera, 70, began his teaching career at a junior high school in the Bronx, New York. He’s authored several books, including Sex, The Facts, The Acts and Your continued on page 4 Feelings, which has been translated into 17 languages. Today, Carrera, EdD, is best known as the director of the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program at the Children’s Aid Society (CAS). It’s a comprehensive program he started in 1970 that extends far beyond comprehensive sexuality education. CAS-Carrera program participants join at age 10 or 11. For the next seven years, they attend after-school classes six days per week, 50 weeks per year, until they graduate from high school. The low-income students, who Carrera views as “at promise,” not “at risk,” receive training in several areas: employment, arts and counseling, and family life/sexuality education. And they also receive free medical and dental care. Michael Carrera. That’s one reason Carrera is this year’s recipient for AASECT’s Professional Standard of Excellence Award. In 1984, Carrera received the AASECT Distinguished Service Award. He’s also served as president of the board of directors of the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) and AASECT. On receiving the Professional Standard of Excellence Award, Carrera says, “This is a singular honor.”
