Contemporary Sexuality - July 2008 - (Page 2) From the Executive Director his is our second digitized issue of CS! We hope you have already moved to the utilitarian new digital online version of Contemporary Sexuality. You can always print a copy on your desk printer and still save funds for your membership guild association. To choose to “Go Green,” send a note to TMoore@aasect.org and request the electronic version of CS. • New Orleans: By the time you see this issue, we will have returned from the Big Easy and the Bayou state of Louisiana, having celebrated our 40th conference anniversary. Once again, we need to thank our poet in residence, Judy Seifer, for her contest-winning theme entry, The Rhythm of Our Roots: 40 Years of Sexuality Education and Health Celebrated Through Song, Story and Science. • Congratulations to all our prize winners at this year’s awards celebration at the conference including the Schiller Prize winners Brent Satterly and Don Dyson for their winning workshop proposal, Sexual Identities of Lesbians and Gay Men. • Speaking of the founder of AASECT, Patricia Schiller, JD, MA, we are now featuring a special short video interview with her on the AASECT website. In January, AASECTcertified educator and producer Robert Dunlap and I travelled to Palm Beach, Florida to spend several hours talking with Patricia Schiller about the early days when she and several prescient professionals created our membership guild association. You can see some of her conversation at www.aasect.org/about.asp. • Scholarship winners: We are also pleased to congratulate the first recipients of two prestigious new AASECT scholarships. The John Sughrue, Jr., MD, Scholarship, established this year by Joan Sughrue to honor her late husband, Dr. Sughrue, was awarded this year to Andrew R. Branagan of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. The Bill T. Jones Scholarship, established last year by Michele Sugg and Robert Wierzel to honor Mr. Jones, the famous modern dance living legend, was awarded this year to Gwendolyn Bailey, MSW, of Kansas. For more information on both these scholarships, visit http://www.aasect.org/annualcon.asp. In addition, our other scholarship winners this year were Brittany Charlton and John Beiter . • Give an Hour: AASECT has recently begun collaborating with a new group that is seeking to serve U.S. troops and military families affected by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Give an Hour [www.giveanhour.org/skins/gah/ home.aspx] seeks mental health providers who are willing to volunteer to provide care to these individuals, couples and families. More information is available at info@givean hour.org. 2 Contemporary Sexuality T sexuality AASECT Executive Director Founder AASECT Board of Directors President President Elect Secretary Treasurer Membership Steering Chair Certification Steering Chair Outreach Steering Chair Professional Education Steering Committee Chair Public Relations, Media & Advocacy Steering Committee Communications Steering Chair Stephen Conley, PhD Patricia Schiller, MA, JD Patti Britton, PhD Helen “Ginger” Bush, MSW Lloyd Sinclair, MSSW Russell Stambaugh, PhD Hani Miletski, MSW, PhD Peggy Kleinplatz, PhD P.
