One in four women in the United States has visited a Planned Parenthood health center during her lifetime.” — Cecile Richards Since the mid-1980s, the CAS-Carrera model has relied on donations from foundations and individuals to provide services to about 2,000 preteens and teens in more than a dozen cities nationwide, including New York, Baltimore, Atlanta, Houston and Flint, Michigan. Carrera blames the focus on abstinence-only education for the lack of public funds on proven sexuality education programs, calling the $1.5 billion spent on abstinence-only a “waste of taxpayer money.” However, he sees the landscape shifting. Since 2007, governments have begun kicking in to help pay for the program. The Connecticut Department of Social Services and the city of Newark, New Jersey are paying for implementation of the CAS-Carrera model. “It’s been two-and-a-half decades without public funding for us,” Carrera says. “For it to change like it has is informing my optimism.” Carrera has no immediate plans to retire, saying he’ll consider calling it quits when he hits 80. In the meantime, the business plan for the CASCarrera model is to triple the number of participants to 6,000 in five years. Humanitarian Award The purpose of AASECT’s Humanitarian Award is to honor “an individual or group who has contributed to the field of sexology through private endeavors, charitable events, public awareness campaigns, positive sexuality education or political platforms.” Recent winners have included Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union, and Phil Harvey of DKT International, an organization dedicated to selling affordable condoms worldwide. The 2008 recipient is Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), the leading provider of accessible family planning services in the United States. In his nominating letter, former AASECT president Barnaby Barratt praised PPFA for promoting “a common-sense approach to women’s and men’s health and well-being.” Added Barratt, “This approach is conspicuously based on a humanitarian respect of the individual’s right to make educated decisions about sexuality issues.” PPFA President Cecile Richards, in a press release celebrating National Women’s Health Week, summarized the group’s impact. “With more than 860 affiliate health centers nationwide providing services to millions of women each year, our positive impact on women’s health is Cecile Richards noticeable,” Richards said. “One in four women in the United States has visited a Planned Parenthood health center during her lifetime. In addition to contraceptive services, we provide cervical and breast cancer screenings, as well as information and education about sexual health and safety.” Distinguished Service Award Three AASECT members — Jim Huggins, John Sughrue, Jr. and Joan Sughrue — are being honored with the Distinguished Service Award, which highlights outstanding service to the organization.
