Contemporary Sexuality - July 2008 - (Page 6) “People grow and change over time because of the experiences they have. It’s not something that is static.” — Brent Satterly Don Dyson Brent Satterly Schiller Lecture Prize Brent Satterly, PhD, and Don Dyson, PhD, a pair of AASECT-certified sex therapists, are this year’s winners of the Schiller Lecture Prize, an award given to best conference proposal for a worshop utilizing interactive learning strategies. The workshop, presented at the organization’s recent gathering in New Orleans, focused on how the sexual identities of lesbians and gay men may change over time. Inspired by Michelle Eliason’s “cyclical pattern through which individuals explore and adopt new identities,” Satterly and Dyson argue that many lesbians and gay men experience changes in sexual identity over time. For example, a young lesbian may identify as a butch or femme in her twenties before raising a child and then seeing herself as a queer parent. “People grow and change over time because of the experiences they have,” Satterly says. “It’s not something that is static.” Satterly and Dyson have been team teaching a “Sexual Minorities” class at Widener University in Pennsylvania for the past six years. The Schiller Lecture Prize is named for AASECT founder Patricia Schiller, MA, JD. Schiller served as AASECT executive director from 1967-1980.
