After arriving home, Mom greets her 13-yearold daughter (who is dutifully doing her homework at the kitchen table) and then receives a phone call from the girl’s teacher. The teacher tells Mom that the comprehensive sex education her daughter received was inappropriate. “I’m embarrassed to even read you some of the things in here,” the teacher says. The fictional scenario continues with the teacher informing Mom that the curriculum included instructions to teens that “showering together is a green light activity.” Mom gets upset, asks her daughter if that really happened, the girl says it did. Viewers are then asked to go to a website (www.parentsfortruth.org) that attempts to create a lobbying effort to save federal funding for abstinence-only sexuality education. Advocates for Youth president James Wagoner called it a “classic fear and smear campaign” that is “absolutely misleading.” Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, also blasted it. “We’ve wasted $1.5 billion on so-called abstinence-only programs that don’t work.” (Washington Post, June 1) Take the Guttmacher Institute quiz What percentage of Americans are not virgins when they get married?
