Contemporary Sexuality - August 2008 - (Page 2) News from the AASECT board meeting T he AASECT Board of Directors met on June 25 for its semi-annual meeting. The following are highlights of other discussions and some of the motions that carried: • An online membership directory is in the works and will be available (to members only) shortly. • The AASECT listserv currently has 590 subscribers. The Communication Steering Committee continues to look at ways to make the listserv more user-friendly, as well as finding ways to implement distance learning opportunities on the AASECT website. • The member who brings in the largest number of new members to AASECT will be recognized at the next conference. The cut-off day is a month before the conference. • An AASECT Winter Institute for intermediate and advanced sex therapists will take place in Boca Raton, Fla. from January 9-11, 2009. The faculty includes Sallie Foley and Barry McCarthy. • Half of the required supervision hours for certification can be done as group supervision. Group supervision is, however, limited to four hours per session and no more than four supervisees. Participants in these group supervision sessions will be awarded one hour supervision for each hour they attended. • The Sexuality Education Certification Committee developed an annual award for AASECT certified sexuality educators. This award recognizes individuals who have made longstanding contributions, outstanding achievements, or otherwise had a major impact in one or more areas of sexuality education. These areas of impact may include, but are not limited to, teaching in the community, teaching in higher education, raising public awareness of sexual issues, or public advocacy/lobbying policymakers. Nominations must be made to the current chair of the AASECT Sexuality Education Certification Committee; self-nominations are not accepted. The person making the nomination must include a letter stating the nominee’s accomplishments, two letters of support for the nomination, and a brief form of the nominee’s CV. The committee is not obligated to give an award every year, and nominees are expected to have been in the field at least 10 years. The Board has approved this award. • The Board has approved formal statements developed by the Advocacy Committee on the following issues: sexuality education, LGBTQQ issues, polyamory, swinging, BDSM, and paraphilias. These statements will allow the Advocacy Committee to act in a timely, efficient and productive manner, enabling AASECT to have strong visibility and be active in advocacy on many levels within the professional, educational and advocacy communities. — Hani Miletski Chair, Membership Services Steering Committee sexuality AASECT Executive Director Founder AASECT Board of Directors President President Elect Secretary Treasurer Membership Steering Chair Certification Steering Chair Outreach Steering Chair Professional Education Steering Committee Chair Public Relations, Media & Advocacy Steering Committee Communications Steering Chair Stephen Conley, PhD Patricia Schiller, MA, JD Helen “Ginger” Bush, MSW William W.
