Simon Pulse, 2007. $14.99. Doing It Right is a general overview of many of the sexuality topics that adolescents have questions about. Some of the issues that Pardes covers include anatomy, puberty, safer sex, contraception, queer and transgender concerns, sexual abuse and masturbation. The book is written in a very clear, open style that shows Pardes’ experience speaking about sexuality with youth. She also gracefully navigates her way through areas that are often labeled challenging or controversial. When she discusses abortion, coming out as queer, deciding when one is ready to have sex, or other similar Bronwen Pardes concerns, she presents different perspectives and offers enough information to help teens develop their own answers. The factual information is presented as fact; potential choices are presented as choices without judgment or pressure. Pardes provides a solid foundation without overwhelming the reader with detail and manages to accurately explain complex topics in simple language. While Doing It Right is written for teens, the information will also be useful for parents and professionals who work with teens.
