The full length film is a groundbreaking documentary on male sexual victimization. The project started when men in Braveman’s men’s group created a homemade video and distributed it as a personal message to workshop attendees at an AASECT conference. Braveman will offer a free copy of the DVD, when available, to each member of AASECT. The website for the film is www.boyhoodshadows.org. Gerald Rogers (Amarillo, Tex.) taught a three hour course on Mental Health Ethics to 50 practitioners, through Amarillo College’s Continuing Education Division. Richard Sprott (Berkely, Calif.), the executive director of Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities (CARAS), presented at the American Psychological Association meeting in Boston on a research agenda for studying polyamory and BDSM. About 100 people attended the symposium, and several people commented afterwards about how happy they were to see this topic addressed comprehensively for the first time at an APA convention. William Picker (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) presented Sex Therapy for Non-Sex Therapists at the Westchester, New York, Psychological Association, and Sex Therapy for Non-Sex Therapists: The Old and the New at the annual meeting of the New York State Psychological Association this summer. His article, Sex Therapy: What the Non-Sex Therapist Should Know was published in the July/August, 2008 NYSPA Notebook. The AASECT board of directors approved Mike McGee (New York, N.Y.) as Chair of the Public Relations, Media, and Advocacy Steering Committee (PRMA), and Debra Haffner (Westport, Conn.) as Chair of the Communications Steering Committee. Both are board positions. The board has approved Angela Schubert (Webster Groves, Mo.) as the State Leader of Missouri and a committee member of the MidContinent Region Membership Committee, headed by Gretchen Fincke (West Bend, Wisc.). The AASECT board has approved a new Special Interest Group (SIG), titled Alt Sex. The SIG’s primary purpose is to be a resource to AASECT members who would like more information about polyamory, swinging and BDSM. The board approved Amy Gilliland (Madison, Wisc.) as the SIG’s Leader, and as a new member of the Membership Services Steering Committee (MSSC). The AASECT board has also approved Fred Stickle (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Lynda Talmadge (Atlanta, Ga.) to be added to the Supervisor Certification Committee, chaired by Gretchen Fincke (West Bend, Wisc.). News of Members is a regular column in this publication. Please submit a brief account of your professional or personal news to Hani@DrMiletski.com. Alt Sex group formed N ear the end of the New Orleans conference, seven of us formed a new Special Interest Group (SIG). We shared a variety of interests in non-mainstream sexual behaviors. After much discussion we decided on the moniker of the “Alt Sex” SIG. Our statement of purpose reads: “The primary purpose of the Alt Sex SIG is to be a resource to AASECT members who would like more information about polyamory, swinging and BDSM. Alt Sex SIG members are researchers, educators, counselors and therapists who specialize in these communities. They may or may not be members of these communities. A second purpose is to offer networking and support for professionals as many members may be isolated and unaware of others who do similar work. Thirdly, the Alt Sex SIG may be a research gateway for AASECT members wanting to conduct research in these areas or find out what research has already been done.” Our current membership is a mixture of student members, therapists and educators. We are looking forward to connecting with other AASECT members who share our professional interests and areas of expertise. We discussed whether there should really be two SIGs — one for BDSM and another for polyamory and swinging. It was decided that for the time being we’ll share the same SIG. We have received formal recognition from the AASECT Board of Directors and have launched a list serve for AASECT members. As the leader of the SIG, I’m also the list serve moderator. One of our first projects is to start an inventory of member interests so that a request could be directed to an appropriate person.
