Contemporary Sexuality - January 2009 - (Page 10) News from AASECT’s Board of Directors meeting in Puerto Rico T We are now much closer to a package that should offer options for members to purchase long-term care, short-term disability and various forms of life insurance. he AASECT Board of Directors met November 5-6 in Puerto Rico, in conjunction with the SSSS annual meeting. The following directors were present: Ginger Bush, President; Bill Finger, President-elect; Hani Miletski, Membership Services Steering Committee Chair; Russell Stambaugh, Treasurer; Michele Sugg, Outreach Steering Committee Chair; Donald Dyson, Professional Education Steering Committee Chair; Debra Haffner, Communications Steering Committee Chair; Mike McGee, Public Relations, Media and Advocacy Committee Chair; and Steve Conley, Executive Director. The following are some of the motions, discussion, and news we thought the membership would like to know about: A mentoring web page will soon be added to the AASECT website to assist in the mentoring process and to help connect with a local mentor. The Mentoring Committee is working on developing an orientation packet for mentors. And, just a reminder — mentors on the Mentoring Committee get one CE per year. 500 of the current 1,919 AASECT members (the numbers change every day) have “gone green,” and all new members are joining “green.” There are currently more than 600 members on the listserv. Executive Director Steve Conley is hard at work to find solid companies to offer our members discounted benefits through our professional credentialing association. We are now much closer to a package that should offer options for members to purchase long-term care, short-term disability and various forms of life insurance. Potential exists for group health and dental coverage. In addition, we may be able to offer a menu of retirement plans for private practitioners through a major investment firm. A particular area of research has included the search for a solid professional liability coverage plan for educators. The Certification Steering Committee was charged with revising the recertification guidelines for lapsed members. Until such revision occurs, certified individuals whose membership expired, or those who let their certification expire, may be recertified by sending the following to the office: A letter of explanation, a copy of the original certificate, the appropriate fee and at least 20 CEs from the last few years. Having found that no clear policy is in place, the board requested that the Certification Steering Committee develop written guidelines for individual supervisors and/or individuals in special status programs about when and how individuals can begin accumulating AASECT accredited supervision hours. AASECT-approved CE providers may only grant CEs for trainings that they deliver themselves. Guest speakers in such instances may only comprise less than 20 percent of the time for which CEs are granted. The CE Approval Committee, under the Professional Education Steering Committee, was charged with drafting guidelines for the approval of web-based learning experiences. — Hani Miletski, Chair, Membership Services Steering Committee Remembering Sol Gordon continued from page 9 And so on. When I was a teenager, Sol’s book, “New You” and his comic books reassured me. As a young professional, he inspired me. As the executive director of Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, he often wrote me notes, some encouraging and complimentary, others with suggestions for what we could be doing better. His was a life well lived and his legacy will live on in all who read his books, who he trained, and who laughed with him. 10 Contemporary Sexuality If you know of an AASECT member’s illness or death in the family, please let the Membership Services Steering Committee know, so we can reach out and let that member know that he/she is in our thoughts.
