Contemporary Sexuality - February 2009 - (Page 6) Conference Preview continued from page 5 “It’s a smaller, boutique hotel. … There’s an amazing outdoor space where we can enjoy the cool desert evenings. The hotel is just a few miles from the Painted Desert and the shops and spas of Sedona. The city has a thriving GLBT nightlife. And there’s an emerging cultural scene in Phoenix.” — Brent Satterly pain and beauty. The thing that you thought destroyed you also made you who you are.” In 2004, the play opened to glowing reviews at the McGinn/ Cazale Theater in Manhattan. Ben Brantley of the New York Times called Moran’s writing and performance a “remarkably coherent yet complicated firsthand perspective” where “guilt and liberation jostle for dominance.” Martin Moran has appeared in several Broadway productions, including “Titanic,” “Cabaret” and “Bells Are Ringing.” “The Tricky Part” won an Obie Award in 2004. Another artistic offering at the conference will be a screening of “Boyhood Shadows,” a documentary film by Terri DeBono and Steve Rosen that explores the “emotional carnage of childhood sexual abuse.” According to press materials, the movie “journeys with Glenn, a survivor of sexual abuse at the age of ten — but now 48 years old, chronicling his struggle to make sense of his life as a child in the clutches of a sexual predator, forced to hold his secret and shame inside.” In addition to the enriching educational opportunities, conference attendees will be able to relax in the splendor of the Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa, a 320-room hotel with a luxurious spa, fitness center and an outdoor seating area “surrounded by water and fire features.” Brent Satterly, one of the conference organizers, lists the benefits of the conference hotel and the greater Phoenix area. “It’s a smaller, boutique hotel,” he says. “Ours will be the only conference on-site at the time. There’s an amazing outdoor space where we can enjoy the cool desert evenings. The hotel is just a few miles from the Painted Desert and the shops and spas of Sedona. The city has a thriving GLBT nightlife. And there’s an emerging cultural scene in Phoenix.” Sold. Sold. And sold. You can register for the conference online (aasect.org/annualcon.asp), by fax or mail. Clarification A n article on President Obama’s legislative agenda in the January issue prompted this clarification request from the office of Senator Max Baucus (D-Montana): “Continued funding for abstinence-only education has historically been paired with legislation in the Senate to extend Temporary Medical Assistance (TMA), a program that provides health care for families with very low incomes, as a compromise between Republicans and Democrats. This compromise has allowed the committee to extend the TMA program and continue to provide health care to people moving from welfare to work. Senator Baucus, whose committee has jurisdiction over both TMA and abstinence education programs, does not support abstinence-only funding. His position on abstinence-only programs has been that medically accurate and complete education for the nation’s children is a necessary minimum standard that has not been met by these programs.” 6 Contemporary Sexuality www.aasect.org | February 2009 Vol. 43, No. 2 http://aasect.org/annualcon.asp http://www.aasect.org
