Cliff Lee was settling back for a few days off after his 11th win of the season for the Cleveland Indians. The Benton and university of Arkansas product should be a certain selection for the Major League All-Star Game at New York’s Yankee Stadium July 15. Tyson Gay landed a spot on the u.S. olympic team with an awesome performance in the team trials at Eugene, ore., including a wind-aided time of 9.67 in the 100 meters. The time would have been a world record for the former Razorback if not for the slight breeze. Stacy Lewis continued to amaze us with the way she steps up when she’s playing with the LPGA stars. In her first professional outing since graduating from the university of Arkansas, the Woodlands, Texas, product finished third in the u.S. Women’s open at Interlachen in Minnesota. She held the 54-hole lead at 9-under par but shot 78 on the last year. Analyst Johnny Miller mused during the action of Lewis: “We could be seeing the next Annika Sorenstam.” Heady stuff. Ken Duke, the Henderson State product, had his best golf outing of the season, finishing tied for fourth in the Buick open at 17-under par. The great weekend in Warwick Hills, Mich., was worth $206,667 to the Hope native. m Penthouse & Outhouse BOBBY PETRINO It’s never going to be as good as it is right now for the new Arkansas football coach, until he wins 10 games in a season (that’s well in the future). The excitement of Petrino and a new offense even has some Hog fans thinking of a nice bowl destination and more this fall. What will the mood be on Oct. 26? ADAM JONES Don Imus to the rescue, we suppose. Now the trouble-plagued defensive back formerly known as “Pacman,” property of Jerry Jones’ Cowboys, looks like a good guy. He even offered up a prayer for the big-mouthed and racially insensitive national “shock jock,” who can’t seem to put a sock in it anymore. uniVerSiTy OF arKanSaS aT FayeTTVille hOGGiNG the spOtLiGht: The track world was set on its ear by Tyson Gay. It took a few games for the new Arkansas Twisters coach to get team members all on the same page, but some of the moves he and the front office have made of late would make the local Arenafootball2 team a contender in the bigger AFL. CHRIS SIEGFRIED “I thought Arkansas would be my main choice, but when I got there I wasn’t feeling the love, so it’s like, ‘What’s the use?’” — Pulaski academy’s Cruz Williams on his recent decision to enroll at louisiana Tech instead of his first choice, arkansas. “Ten wins is all good and everything, but I just want the team to win games. I’m not going to be satisfied until we make the playoffs and win the World Series.” — Benton native Cliff Lee of the cleveland indians. On June 9 he became the first american league pitcher to reach 10 wins in 2008. lee had completely turned around his career after a struggling 2007 season. TheBenchWarMerSBlOG.BlOGSPOT.cOM TONY ROMO Please, never sing the national anthem in public ever again. Don’t date a bigname hottie singer or actress until the Cowboys’ season is over this year. Just stick to what you do best: slinging the football around. At least until after the Super Bowl. MOTHER NATURE Yes, we’re aware it’s not nice to fool or mock Mother Nature, but please: Baseball, golf and other outdoor sports suffered in the spring because it was too wet, and then it immediately turned too hot in June to have much fun. We can only imagine what’s in store every Friday and Saturday during football season. It didn’t rain on a single Razorback game the past two seasons. Guess what’s coming, Hog fans. GOLF COMMENTATORS The worst thing about Tiger Woods’ season-ending injury: There’s more man-love being extended these days to the great one than there would have been under usual circumstances, which was still too much. Get ready for round-the-clock “Best of Tiger” during the British Open on the Tiger Channel …, er, Golf Channel. “I’d like to sit out a couple of rocking chairs for them on the sideline, but that would probably just fire them up more. Boy, you’re talking about a couple of Hall of Famers there.” — hermitage high School coach Jeff Stewart on the prospects this fall of facing 2a-8 conference rival Woodlawn and its legendary coaches Jimmy “red” Parker and Marion Glover.
