WOMEN in BUSINESS - February/March 2009 - (Page 39) AbwA members may remember the mocaworks’ presentation gave at the last national Conference, where the concept of learning online was unveiled. “You can’t Google the knowledge inside a company or organization,” says mike Hunter, mocaworks owner along with oca Hoeflein. “we’re building an infrastructure to communicate AbwA’s best practices so it can be learned and shared as a group.” Hunter’s firm has developed comparable programs for such clients as American Airlines, boeing, Chevron and shell, to name a few. The Women’s Instructional Network is scheduled to launch in April with 15 courses specifically developed for ABWA, including such topics as creating a chapter/network charter and all aimed at building Best Practices in local groups throughout the organization. These screen shots represent just a few of the online courses that will be available through the Women’s Instructional Network. When this online training tool launches in April 2009, members will have access to courses that include “Goal Setting and Measuring Results,” “Team Roles and Responsibilities,” “Team Problem Solving” and “Selecting Team Members.” Team building is one of the reasons that American Airlines turned to mocaworks to develop programs for employees of its cargo division. “we’ve been involved in a multi-year, multi-million-dollar re-engineering effort,” says Vicki Kelsey, manager of operational change for American Airlines. “we’re using the online courses that mike Hunter has created for us to re-train our teams as they transition to different ways of doing business,” she says. “it’s extremely flexible and it allows our people to build skills as they need them.” “it’s been a great resource and the lessons are very well designed,” says Kelsey. “it was a different way to deliver training to employees and we find that we are no longer pushing them into training. in fact, the way it’s set up, the process pulls them in.” much like a corporation uses online training to teach employees new skills, AbwA will be using the women’s instructional network for the same purpose, but directed to members and chapter/network officers. The internet is changing the way people learn and obtain information. Today, people are looking for specific bits of information. The women’s instructional network recognizes that shift and capitalizes upon it. “The content we’re bringing in derives from developing work teams, from selecting a team to perpetuating the team,” says Hunter. “And it will force the conversation between members of local groups.” win will also build on the experience of AbwA members and encourage their roles as mentors to younger members. For example, if you are working to build your chapter/ network up as a “best Practices” chapter/ network, you can find a list of experts and contact individuals directly. “win also offers mentoring roles for women who have great experience. And, as a bonus, that helps to keep them involved with the organization,” Hunter observes. “This is really a great opportunity to put a lot of knowledge in the hands of AbwA members and make it easy to use.” but unlike some training programs that are accessed individually, the curriculum for win will need to be completed as a group. “That way it forces members to work it out with each other,” Hunter says. “even that is part of the ‘teaming’ process.” The women’s instructional network is scheduled to launch in April with 15 courses specifically developed for AbwA, and all aimed at building best Practices in local groups throughout the organization. And as American Airlines’ Vicki Kelsey says, “The possibilities are endless.” F E B / M A R 2 0 0 9 w o m e n i n b us i n e s s 39
