WOMEN in BUSINESS - February/March 2009 - (Page 41) 3 4 5 Keep moving. if you rely on the great outdoors for your exercise, winter can be a deterrent. it’s time to rediscover your mall rat days, only you don’t have to shop: indoor malls provide a great place to walk (and little excuse for not doing so). Cures for the common cold. Alright, no one’s found that yet, but at times it seems that just avoiding getting sick is half the battle of winter. You can cut your chances down of catching someone else’s cold with relentless hand-washing, just like your mother always told you. black elderberry, a new supplement chock full of flavonoids, can help as well, says wellington. “Flavonoids have been proven by the FDA and many other sources to be one of the strongest in terms of boosting immune power,” she says, “so [elderberry] can really help prevent you from getting sick by boosting your immune system. 6 7 Think positive. if all that exercise hasn’t released enough endorphins to give you a sunny outlook, try to cultivate one through whatever gets your mind on an optimistic track, whether that’s writing daily affirmations, things you’re grateful for or just reaffirming your goals. “if there was ever a winter to be upbeat and positive, this is the winter to try to do that,” says wellington of the recent economic woes, the worries of which will take a toll on your health. “There is a mind-body connection.” Get enough fruits and veggies. it’s almost feng shui,” says wellington. “we have a tendency during the winter to have more sweets sometimes; the vegetables will be the opposite of that and will really balance out your diet, especially your greens.” A multivitamin is never a bad idea either—after all, who can get all their nutrients from food while grabbing breakfast on the way to the office? Stay hydrated, inside and out. You know it’s important to drink water, which you should be especially mindful of in the winter since you don’t get as thirsty as in the summertime, when you naturally dehydrate faster and drink more water to compensate. Here we’re also talking about your skin, however, which can take a beating as humidity levels drop and the dry heat of offices and homes sucks the moisture out of your skin like a vacuum. moisturized skin looks and feels better, and it’s preventative, too. “The dryer your skin is, the more easily it can be damaged by the sun,” says Terra wellington, a wellness and lifestyle expert and the author of the upcoming book The Mom’s Guide to Growing Your Family Green. Maureen Sullivan keeps her mind and body balanced as a freelance writer whose work has appeared on msn.com and in slate magazine.
