Growing up in a family of restaurateurs in Ogallala, Neb., Marci Davison never really had a choice of professions—food and wine turned out to run in her blood. Which is not to say the young businesswoman didn’t explore other opportunities before succumbing to her passions. She opened Carmela’s Bistro and Wine Bar in Lincoln, Neb., last year. Davison graduated from the University of Nebraska, prepared for a career in human relations and finance. For a few years she put her college training to work for Pegler Sysco Food Services Co., the largest food service distributor in North America. In that capacity, Davison helped other people succeed in the food business. “Finally, I decided that if I could help others open restaurants, I could do it myself,” she says. So with the backing of her parents—Steve and Katherine Davison, who own and operate the Golden Spur Steakhouse & Saloon in Ogallala—Davison opened Carmela’s Bistro and Wine Bar last June. “My parents are my inspiration,” she says. “They taught me everything I know about the business.” She honed her extensive knowledge of wines at the International Wine Guild in Denver where she earned her certification as a wine sommelier. “I love to help people 28 W O M e N I n B US I N e S S a p R / M ay 2 0 0 9
