Fe at u r e Stormy & Forecast: writ ten by KatHLeen LeiGHtOn business Stormy Simon, Overstock.com’s self-made VP of customer service, took an unconventional path to success by keeping her mind open to new possibilities. SUCCESSFUL For someone with the name stormy, the senior vice president of marketing and customer care of overstock.com has an incredibly sunny personality. stormy simon cheerfully admits her parents disagreed over her name, so much so that she wasn’t named until a week after she was born. “my dad had read a book and one of the characters was named stormy,” simon says. “i was teased a lot growing up, with people making jokes about bad weather, but my name has helped me as an adult. if there are a 1,000 people at a conference, they will remember my name because it’s unusual. so now i really appreciate it.” Simon believes one of her strengths throughout her career has been taking advantage of good opportunities, no matter what they pay. After all, she joined Overstock.com as a temp in December of 2001. 12 w o m e n i n b us i n e s s J u n e 2 010 while other little girls played nurse or teacher, simon and her pals were enthralled with women in business suits carrying briefcases. “we played office, pulling out calculators and anything we could find with buttons that we could push,” she says. “that was the beginning, but i have never wavered from that. i have always loved business. it was what i wanted to do from the time i was very young.” becoming a teenage mom wasn’t in the plan, but simon gave birth to her first son at the age of 18, had her second son at 21, and was divorced shortly after. Her survival instincts kicked in. College was out of the question; simon needed to put food on the table. “i was on welfare,” she says. “i had two boys to support, that was my reality. i took a job as a receptionist, and three days later, the assistant to the president of the company quit. http://www.Overstock.com http://www.Overstock.com
