F E AT U R E the face behind Susan Lordi's respect for the customer and unrelenting attention to quality control are foundations for the ongoing success of her figurine business. willow WrIt teN by LEIGH ELMORE tree For Susan Lordi, a trained and practicing fiber artist, the chance in 1999 to create a line of sculptural figurines became the opportunity of a lifetime. Neither Susan, nor the person who enlisted her talents, Dave Kiersznowki, co-owner of Demdaco, a worldwide distributor of creative products, had any idea of the far-reaching impact Susan's talent would have in the international gift industry. "When Dave Kiersznowski asked me to do a gift line, I approached it not as a product designer or commercial artist. I didn't know how to do that. I came to it as an artist used to working one piece at a time. I had been showing my textile work in galleries or exhibitions. I was also teaching at the Kansas City Art Institute at the time, so I approached the idea of a line somewhat differently-with a different mindset. I wanted each piece to be unique. "Having never designed a commercial product, I did some initial research. In stores, I was often overwhelmed by all the stuff; figures seemed removed and overly decorated. I couldn't really relate to them. So I just tried to concentrate on the form, eliminating any extraneous details and colors, and just focused on the gesture.
