PERsonal PoRTfolio the job Skills plus a positive attitude equal job survivability following a layoff. survival equation it doesn't matter if you're looking for a job, trying to make a go of a new venture, or trying to survive layoff rounds in a flagging company. skills and attitude will be how you get or keep a job. many employers are handing out pink slips at the same time they're hiring. sometimes it's a one-for-one exchange: An under-performer is let go and someone with greater promise is hired to fill the vacancy. more often these days, a fine performer is let go because her skills aren't needed, and the new hire is brought in to fill an entirely different job description. For many workers, updating skills is the easier part. It's the attitude side of the survivability equation that's hard, largely because of a key component of human nature: We don't always see ourselves as others see us. 36 w o m e n i n b u s i n e s s W i n T E R 2 013 wRiT Ten bY DianE sTaffoRD That's the skills part of the job survivability equation. being a computer programmer isn't enough if you don't know the right programs. being a good communicator isn't enough if you don't know how to use social media to communicate. There's no blanket prescription for the right skills. They are industry and occupation specific. it behooves workers to know what their employer's current needs are. being the company's star performer five years ago isn't going to save you if the company is looking to cut unproductive costs. You have to be a top performer now, and that means understanding-and providing- what's needed. if you don't know what's needed, you have to ask. You have to ask your bosses what they want you to be doing that you're not doing now. in an ideal workplace, they'll tell you without you having to ask. For countless reasons, that doesn't always happen. usually you'll find out too late that you weren't meeting performance expectations. once you learn what specific skills you're missing, you must get them. if the employer doesn't offer in-house training, check out classes at your local community college or in AbwA. There are many credential programs as a well as degree programs that can get you up to speed at a fairly modest cost.
