Jarhead (AC Nov. '05): "I left the line of
lights in the shot so that the light interacted with the smoke in the atmosphere

put in flames. The bombing of Tokyo,
which is visible in the distance, already

made this a CG shot, so removing my
light sources was not a significant
complication."
One of Deakins' favorite shots in
the movie shows Bird looking out at the
sunset a few days after the bombing,
with smoke still rising across the bay.
"He was on the balcony and there was a
Japanese flag in front of him, between
him and Tokyo Bay," the cinematographer recalls. "We shot it just as the sun
was going down behind the flag, so we
had this beautiful sunset behind the sun
on the Japanese flag."
With the tide of war shifting, the
prisoners were moved to a third camp,
Naoetsu, which was located on the west
coast of Japan, in an abandoned salt
factory on a cliff overlooking a seaport,
where the prisoners unloaded coal from
barges and trains. The movie's Naoetsu
was shot on Cockatoo Island in Sydney
Harbor. "Our site was an old dockyard
from World War II where they built
torpedo boats and destroyers," says
