help get her life back on the rails.
The movie's screenplay, by Nick
Hornby, is adapted from Strayed's bestselling memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found
on the Pacific Crest Trail. Witherspoon
and producing partner Bruna Papandrea
approached Jean-Marc Vallée to direct
after seeing his work on the coming-ofage drama C.R.A.Z.Y. and the period
piece The Young Victoria. After Vallée
committed to Wild, he came out with
Dallas Buyers Club (2013) and then
reteamed with that film's cinematographer, Yves Bélanger, CSC, to tackle
Strayed's story.
Based in Montreal, Quebec,
Bélanger and Vallée met more than 20
years ago and have since collaborated on
numerous commercials as well as The
Secret Adventures of Jules Verne, which
was among the first hour-long episodic
series to be shot in HD. Continuing
their habit of challenging traditional
methods, the two filmmakers set out to
make Wild in a style similar to Dallas
Buyers Club: using handheld photography nearly exclusively and, wherever
possible, no movie lights and a very
small crew.

Vallée first employed this
approach on Café de Flore, shot by Pierre
Cottereau and involving child actors
with Down syndrome whose scenes the
director sought to capture as naturalistically as possible. "I wanted to be able to
shoot 360 degrees," says Vallée of the
2011 drama. "I wanted the actors to be
able to go anywhere. I asked the rest of
the crew to leave, and I thought, 'Oh my

God, this is great.' On Dallas, I told
Yves, 'Let's force ourselves to make this
film in 25 days, with little money,
[while] giving the film over to the
actors.'"
"You would think this kind of
guerrilla style is for the young, but you
need a lot of experience to be able to
judge if a situation is interesting visually," adds Bélanger, seated beside Vallée
