"Michel and I love the magic of film.

and I love the magic of film.
Sometimes you take a risk
and see what happens,
and sometimes you have
surprises. Because I have
been working with the same
timer, Richard Deusy, for 10
years, we can usually avoid
bad outcomes and embrace
the good surprises."
When asked to describe
the look, Schiffman says,
"It's a little brownish at
times, and desaturated just
a little bit, but still realistic.
We put a lot of color in
the production design, so
there's still strong color in
the images. It's hopefully a
realistic vision of what the
war looks like."
The camera is often
handheld, but carefully
framed to the director's
specifications. Some
shots are similar to news
footage, but at other times,
the camerawork is more
cinematic. Schiffman
cautions that the film is
not an action war movie,
but a story that takes place
during a war. He says that
sometimes the sensation
is that someone was hiding
and filming what was
happening.
The entire film was shot
in the country of Georgia
on KODAK VISION3 500T

exposed normally. The
filmmakers used a single
camera, and for 90 percent
of the film, the lens was
an ANGENIEUX OPTIMO
45-120 mm zoom. At night,
Schiffman turned to COOKE
S5 lenses to make better
use of limited light. The lab
was Technicolor in Paris.
After three previous
films with Hazanavicius
that were lighter in tone,
The Artist and the Bond
spoofs OSS 117: Cairo, Nest
of Spies and OSS 117: Lost in
Rio, Schiffman was happy to
work on a darker film.
"I never like to do the
same thing," he says. "I
like to work on different
stories, and pass through
everything. That's what's
great about Michel - he
wants to change it up.
When we start a new
movie, we're trying to
find a completely new
cinematographic identity.
After The Artist, I got offers
to do black-and-white
movies. But I've done that!
I'm already looking forward
to the next project."
