room, Culliton rigged some six to
eight Photon LiteCubes above the
table, which created a soft top-source
that maintained directionality and
shape. "We used LiteCubes extensively on this movie," he says. "The
LiteCube is essentially a hybrid LED
Japanese lantern skinned with Light
Grid or muslin, with a retractable
black skirt. Given the tight spaces in
these practical locations, we needed a
lighting scheme that was easy to
deploy and versatile. The lightweight
nature of the LiteCubes, and their
dimming and color control, allowed
us to move quickly, but without sacrificing control." Culliton's company,
Photon LLC, produces both the
LiteCube and the Wafflelite. The rest
of the fixtures came from Paskal
Lighting.
Walker considers the most
important part of her job to be storytelling. "Sometimes people think it's
creating cool images, but it's not," the

cinematographer opines. "It's about
serving the story and the drama, and
doing it in a way that brings audiences
into the time and experiences of the
characters. I start from more of an
emotional level and then I work out
the technical. The technical is the way
to express the art."
Walker lauds her entire team,
not only for their terrific work but also
for how much of themselves they put
into the production. "It was quite a
moving story for all of us," she
concludes. "More than once I would
look over and see the gaffer or a grip
crying. The entire film was an incredibly emotional experience."
