Ruelle in Montreal, which specializes in
sourcing a wide variety of 8mm films from
private collections, then catalogues and
licenses them for projects such as Expo 67
Live. "At first I wrote the scenario based on
what I watched," Lanoie-Brien recalls.
"Then we had to see if it worked with the
footage on a multiscreen, so we had to
order much more than we used." Lanoie
and a team of editors worked with the
footage in Adobe Premiere Pro and After
Effects, displaying all nine of the Expo 67
Live canvases simultaneously - a process
analogous to the way In the Labyrinth had
been edited on a custom five-screen Moviola.
More than 1,000 archival elements
-
including
audio
recordings,
photographs, and 8mm, 16mm and 35mm
black-and-white and color films - were
distilled into the final 27-minute piece,
which chronicles the expo's five-year
construction and opening day, and
attempts to re-create some of its most
popular attractions. Expo 67 Live audiences
are invited to discover - or rediscover -
Expo 67's various national pavilions, as well
as peek into the control room, take a tour
on the Expo Express, or witness the opening ceremonies at Place des Nations.
Many of the archived film elements
had been digitized in standard definition,
and some reels were damaged in places,
with breaks joined by masking tape. LanoieBrien therefore had most of the elements
re-scanned by the NFB at 2K or 4K on Spirit
DataCine and Arriscan film scanners. To
allow some flexibility, the director had more
material scanned than she would actually
need, taking up more than 170 terabytes
on the NFB's media server. William Holly
and Marie-France Rousseau from the NFB
supervised the restoration work.
In order to fully realize Lanoie-Brien's
vision, which also called for a marriage of
the archival footage with new visual-effects
elements, the NFB called upon the expertise
of Francis Gélinas of the Montreal-based
media company Couleur.tv, who joined the
Expo 67 Live team as design art director. "I
chose Francis because I wanted to work
with artistic people, and I wanted more
R&D," says Lanoie-Brien.
The scanned images were delivered
