Spotlight on LEDs

Between new companies
continually entering the
marketplace and ever-expanding offerings from established
vendors, LED lighting has
become a permanent fixture in
the landscape of modern
productions. While space
precludes an exhaustive list,
here's a brief survey of a
number of recently introduced
products in the LED arena.
Claiming a lifespan 2,000 times longer than that of a metalhalide system - with an output twice as bright while operating at
a quarter of the cost - the Anthem One is a modular LED solution
based on swappable solid-state wafers coated with an array of
micro LEDs. The Anthem One packs 30,000 potential lumens and a
variable CRI of up to 98 into a 5.5" cube that weighs 7.6 pounds.
The cube houses Kensington lock ports for security as well as a
¼-20 threaded bottom-socket and an array of neodymium magnets
for mounting options, allowing users to assemble multiple Anthem
Ones into a single panel, or even to secure it to steel beams or any
other magnetic surface. Drawing less than 200 watts, the Anthem
Power ballast is an intelligent power supply that can be plugged into
any 110- or 220-volt socket.
The Aladdin Fabric-Lite is a flexible and foldable 3'x3' lighting
panel that can be combined to create panels as large as 12'x12'.
Using Velcro and grommets, the Fabric-Lite can be mounted in
a wide array of configurations. Available in 200- and 350watt powering options, the Fabric-Lite boasts three dimmer
selections: one output up to 350 watts, four outputs up to
200 watts each, and nine outputs utilizing 200 or 350
watts each.
Aladdin also offers several more conventional fixtures,
including the bi-color (2,900-6,500K) Base-Lite 100 and
200 - 100 watts and 200 watts, respectively - which
boast a CRI of 98 and can be powered from V-Lock or
Gold Mount batteries. The company's Bi-Flex M7 is a
smaller, flexible panel that measures 30cm x 30cm x
5mm. With a worldwide distributor network, Aladdin
lights are available in the U.S. via Zylight.
K5600's Joker series - now a quarter-century old -
has been completely redesigned as the Joker2. Still available
in the same 400-, 800- and 1,600-watt strengths, the Joker2
heads feature a threaded ring to mount a clear or frosted

borosilicate cover for toolless
relamping of either 3,200K or
5,600K bulbs. Accepting
most existing K5600 Joker
accessories, the three-axis
mount and yoke has a stronger
braking system and an internal
hook to better accommodate larger
light-shaping tools such as light banks,
ellipsoid spots and K5600 Softubes, the latter of which transform
narrow beams into a lengthwise linear source of soft, even light.
Next-generation ballasts have one-stop dimmer and wireless DMX
compatibility with Apple devices. The Joker2 800 model has an
improved plug-in igniter to convert the HMI system to a 2K tungsten
in less than a minute.
The P360 Classic portable LED
fixture from Fiilex tops the
company's flagship line of portable
LED heads with enhanced brightness and a dimmable, flicker-free
CCT range of 2,800-6,500K. The
P360 Classic has an extended yoke
and spigot as well as an accessory
lock. With available add-on options
including magnetic diffusers, gel
holders, larger soft boxes, and a 5"
zoom Fresnel that can increase
beam intensity by up to 800 percent,
the fixture draws 90 watts of power, weighs only 1.9 pounds, and
runs on 12-28-volt broadcast batteries.
Westcott's Solix will emit up to 2,100 lux of
5,600K light at 1m, with a beam angle of 120
degrees and flicker-free output at up to 960
fps. At a weight of 3.3 pounds, the Solix
features removable barndoors and frosted
diffusion that affix via a magnetic front.
Rated at 50,000-plus hours of life, the light
draws 60 watts. It also has a tilter bracket
with umbrella receptacle and a light-stand mount
incorporated into its design. The company's
compatible light-shaping tools include Pro Softboxes, Signature Softboxes, Shallow Softboxes,
Stripbanks and 5' Octabanks.
