Society Welcomes van Hoytema
New active member Hoyte van
Hoytema, ASC, FSF, NSC was born in
Switzerland and raised in the Netherlands.
He studied cinematography at the Polish
National Film School in Lodz, and upon
graduation he returned to Amsterdam to
gain a foothold in the industry. He served as
a clapper loader for Jules van den Steenhoven, NSC, and as a camera trainee for
Robby Müller, BVK, NSC. Van Hoytema
then returned to Poland, where a filmschool friend offered him a job pulling focus
on a Swedish TV series; when his friend left
the show early, van Hoytema completed the
episode and earned his first professional
cinematographer credit.
He began shooting a steady stream
of Scandinavian productions, one of which
- Tomas Alfredson's vampire story Let the
Right One In - was an international hit,
bringing van Hoytema to the attention of
filmmakers around the world. Van Hoytema
has won three Guldbagge Awards -
Sweden's equivalent to the Academy
Awards - for his work on Let the Right
One In, The Girl and Call Girl.
Van Hoytema's recent film credits
include Interstellar (AC Dec. '14) and Spectre (AC Nov. '15). He received an ASC
Award nomination for his work on Tinker
Tailor Soldier Spy (AC Dec. '11).

Cinematheque Salutes Zsigmond
The American Cinematheque
recently presented a film-series tribute to
the late Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, HSC at
the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Cosponsored by the ASC and AC, the series
included the features McCabe & Mrs.
Miller, The Long Goodbye, The Deer
Hunter, Blow Out, Obsession, Close
Encounters of the Third Kind, The Sugarland Express and Heaven's Gate, with introductions made by ASC members Caleb
Deschanel, Michael Goi, James Chressanthis and M. David Mullen.
Camerimage Winners Show
in Los Angeles
Camerimage, in partnership with
the ASC and the American Film Institute
Conservatory's cinematography discipline,
recently held its sixth annual winners show
at the AFI campus in Los Angeles. The show
brings selected winning films from the
Camerimage Film Festival to Los Angeles,
with five features, three documentaries,
three "student etudes" and one music
video screened over the course of three
days. Carol, shot by Golden Frog-winner
Ed Lachman, ASC, was among the
features screened.

Manios Sr. Receives SOC Honor
Associate member Steven Manios Sr.
recently received the Society of Camera Operators 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award for
Distinguished Service for his groundbreaking
work in camera optics. The SOC Lifetime
Achievement Awards were presented with the
SOC's Cammy Award at a black-tie event held
at Paramount Studios. The event also served
as a fundraiser for the Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Silverman Passes HPA Baton
During the recent HPA Tech Retreat in
Indian Wells, Calif., ASC associate member
Leon Silverman announced that he is stepping down as president of the HPA. It was also
announced that the organization has changed
its name from the Hollywood Post Alliance to
the Hollywood Professional Association.
"Launching and leading HPA, shoulder
to shoulder with a dedicated and impressive
board, staff and volunteers, has been one of
the most exciting and rewarding accomplishments of my career," said Silverman. "It has
been a true honor to work with so many
colleagues, especially during these exciting
times of industry transition and expansion."
The HPA Board of Directors has elected
Seth Hallen to succeed Silverman, who will
continue to serve on the board in the newly
created role of past president.
