ing people to challenge race and class
bias in city spending to provide
adequate bus service. He was still in
touch with a lot of the families [featured
in that film] at his death. They came to
love him. He cared about that issue; it
was personal to him. He was a communicator and loved telling those kinds of
stories.
In his later years, he took up
making documentaries with a new
vengeance. He was delighted to be
asked to work on them. People would
be thrilled to have him there, but he was
not interested in doing it for money -
he just loved the game. He was practically born with a camera in his hand. He
was spitting vinegar until the very last
moment.
Yates: His documentary film that
has directly impacted so many of us is
the exposé Who Needs Sleep? He
demonstrated that there is no need for
the long hours on film sets, nor for
'Fraturdays' - Friday filming schedules
that go straight through the night into
Saturday morning. He chronicled how
these long shooting days have led to
sleep deprivation and death for
crewmembers who fall asleep at the
wheel. And from Who Needs Sleep?,
Haskell [co-founded] the 12on12off
initiative as a way to limit the filming
workday to 12 hours, with a 12-hour
turnaround.
Hall: For all his activism, he was
so sweet and gentle. When my dad
passed, he was there with Rita and was
always available. He came to see my
son's student film work at Chapman
University. He became someone I could
go to about anything. The industry has
lost a great champion, and my heart
goes out to Jeff, Mark and the rest of his
family. They broke the mold when they
created Haskell, and I will be forever
grateful he came into my life.
Taggart: Haskell felt that a single
individual could make a difference,
although he wasn't a Pollyanna about it.
He would always say, 'You have to keep
fighting. If you despair, you are part of
the problem.' He refused to lose hope.
He also had a tremendous amount of
energy; it's as though he had an energy
field around him.
Jeff Wexler: The thing I most
admired about my father was his
passion and commitment. He stood up
for what he believed in, even when his
views weren't popular. He taught me to
be aware of my responsibility as a
human being on the planet to my fellow
human beings. Remarkably, he maintained a sense of hope until the day he
died.
