American Cinematographer - May 2008 - (Page 10) Global Village The Fall Spins a Far-Flung Yarn by Bob Davis Princess Evelyn (Justine Waddell, right) is just one of the colorful characters conjured up by bedridden movie stuntman Roy Walker (Lee Pace, below) to entertain a young girl (Catinca Untaru) in The Fall. I n The Fall, an injured movie stuntman, Roy (Lee Pace), concocts an epic, globe-spanning tale for Alexandria (Catinca Untaru), a 10-year-old immigrant and fellow hospital patient, in the year 1920. Roy’s time-traveling tale begins in Tivoli, with Alexander the Great lost in some ruins. Then elephants deposit five bandits at another spectacular location, Pangong Tso, a salt lake on the border of India and Tibet. The bandits’ leader finds his brother hanging from a chandelier in the colossal dome of the Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, and not long afterward, one of the bandits meets his maker at an ancient stepwell in Rajasthan. Shot on location in India, China, Cambodia, Bali, Fiji, Argentina, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa and elsewhere, The Fall marks the first feature for cinematographer Colin Watkinson and the second for director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, AC Sept. ’01). The two met in 1992, when Watkinson was a motion-control assistant working for Kent Houston on a commercial Tarsem directed; by 2003, Watkinson was lighting commercials for the director. Watkinson joined The Fall just three weeks before principal photography began, but he notes that Singh had been prepping the project on and off for 10 years. “Three walls of Tarsem’s office were covered in visual references, and that was incredibly useful,” says Watkinson. The key to working on so many locations was “being flexible,” he continues. “Josh Robertson, our assistant director, and Tommy Turtle, our producer, did an amazing job keeping us on track.
