Davis and Sean Stiegemeier 2008 ASC Laszlo Kovacs Heritage Awards for their cinematography on student projects. Davis’ short film, The Line, was produced as part of the undergraduate program at the Lawrence and Kristina T Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. Stiegemeier’s project, The Butcher’s Daughter, was produced as part of a collective graduate thesis project for the American Film Institute. The Line Shot in Super 35mm mostly on location in the Arizona desert, The Line follows a Latino migrant worker and his son as they make their way through the desert, and an American rancher and his son who are protecting their land. Both father-and-son relationships are dangerously strained, and the duos’ paths eventually cross. Cinematographer Andrew M. Davis and director Kent Bassett were inspired by The Border Film Project, wherein undocumented migrants and Minutemen volunteers along the U.S.Mexico border were given disposable cameras to capture moments in their dissimilar ways of life. “It’s actually them capturing moments that they feel are significant in their own lives,” Davis explains. “That played a lot into the way we photographed The Line.
