American Cinematographer - May 2008 - (Page 63) Fortune. In these locations, he also had to use more traditional movie lights, HMI Pars, and replace the bulbs in practical lamps with higher-wattage bulbs. For Nagle, the emergence of shows that mix technologies the way Spinotti did on Deception is “really the best of both worlds.” He notes, “In the years since HD cameras got into the hands of working cinematographers, many have questioned which will ultimately win out, film or video. To see them work in concert together is to realize that they both have a place in the world of image acquisition. Film has its strengths, and so does video. Finding a way to creatively integrate them will ultimately enable cinematographers to realize any shot imaginable.” Although he was initially reluctant to explore digital cinematography on Deception, Langenegger notes the Genesis has indisputable strengths: “There are some scenes we did in a hotel room with Ewan and Maggie Q, and you can see Times Square perfectly out the window with them in the foreground. There would never have been a way to do that on film. When I look at the movie now, I think Dante used the Genesis beautifully for the scenes where it made sense to work that way.” For Spinotti, the results speak for themselves. “The HD and film footage cuts together so well that now that Deception has been graded, I cannot tell which is which when I watch it. I can remember which is which, of course, but it’s very hard to tell just by looking at the image.” I TECHNICAL SPECS 2.40:1 High-Definition Video and Super 35mm Panavision Genesis; Panaflex Millennium, Millennium XL Panavision Primo, Super Speed; Angenieux lenses Kodak Vision Expression 500T 5229, Vision2 250D 5205 Digital Intermediate Printed on Kodak Vision Premier 2393 and Vision 2383 63 http://www.lumapanel.com
