American Cinematographer - May 2008 - (Page 64) Beautiful Minds The Academy’s Sci-Tech Awards honor the industry’s top technical innovators. by Jean Oppenheimer he Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences presented 10 Scientific and Technical Achievement Academy Awards at this year’s black-tie ceremony, held in February at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Also recognized during the evening were David A. Grafton, who was honored with the Gordon E. Sawyer Award; David Inglish, who received the John A. Bonner Award; and Jonathan Erland, who received the Award of Commendation. The John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation, named in honor of the late director of special projects at Warner Hollywood Studios, is presented to an individual for “outstanding service and dedication in upholding the high standards of the Academy.” This year’s recipient, David Inglish, is perhaps best known for his involvement with Disney’s Computerized Animation Production System (CAPS), and for producing Disney’s first all-computer-animated short film, Oilspot and Lipstick (1987). For the past 12 years, he has been the director of audio and video technology at NBC Universal. A native Californian, Inglish was born in Glendale and raised in Burbank. He recalls being interested in movies, the entertainment indus- T try and electronics from an early age. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force and studies at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona, he applied for a job with the Walt Disney Co., where he worked in various capacities for the next 29 years. “I started as an electronic tech on the bench in January 1967,” he recalls. “My first job was to do some wiring for Disneyland’s Pirate Ride and Moon Ride.” He spent the next decade designing, building and installing rides and shows for Disneyland and Disney World as part of Walt Disney Imagineering.
