enough sky in widescreen, and that’s a valid point,” says Ryan. “The weather and clouds were constantly moving really quickly in our locations, and you can see that in the 1.33 frame. You tend to look up a bit more. For the cinematographer, compositions can be a challenge, but it’s quite nice when you start seeing things you hadn’t seen before.” Ryan notes that Arnold’s visual influences are primarily still photography, particularly from medium-format cameras, which use the 4x3 frame. For Wuthering Heights, their only visual reference was a book of moody landscapes by photographer Todd Hido. “He shoots through his car window,” says Ryan. “He drives somewhere and takes these beautiful photographs of landscapes, but they’re all distorted because there’s rain or a bit of snow on the windscreen. Andrea loved that.” Knowing he’d be shooting for 40 days in a fairly remote area, Ryan turned to Panavision London for a camera package he knew would be reliable: a Panaflex Millennium XL and Panavision Primo prime and Close Focus lenses. He most often used the 27mm and 40mm lenses. Panavision had to ship an Academy gate from the United States to provide a 1.33 hard mask because the filmmakers intended to finish the picture photochemically. Ryan calls the Millennium XL “a beast” for handholding, but adds, “The advantage is that you can top-mount the magazine. That allows you to put your back to the wall, and that proved to be a good thing on this shoot.” Indeed, Ryan was often in small rooms inside two old farmhouses that served as the production’s main locations, private properties next to the Pennine Way national park. Ryan used an Arri 2C to capture most of the images of nature that are woven throughout the film. Some elements had specific meaning in the book and were mandatory, such as Catherine’s beloved lapwings or the branches tapping at the window that suggest her ghostly presence. But the
