American Cinematographer - June 2008 - (Page 10) Short Takes A Vintage Look for “100 Days” by Iain Stasukevich Right: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings do their thing in the video for “100 Days,” shot by cinematographer Chris Lytwyn. The retro setting was partially inspired by the look of the classic TV variety series The Mike Douglas Show and a live performance by musicians Les McCann and Eddie Harris at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival. S hooting the first bona fide music video for soul group Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings wasn’t just another gig for cinematographer Chris Lytwyn. “I’d always wanted to do a music video for this band,” says the New York native, who now resides in Los Angeles. “When I was in college, I followed them around and caught all their New York City performances.” At one of those shows, Lytwyn and fellow New York University film student Adam Buncher approached Gabe Roth, the bassist for the band and the head of Daptone Records, and tried to convince him they were the ideal team to make a video for the group; Lytwyn would shoot and Buncher would direct. At the time, however, there was no room in the band’s budget for a music video, so Lytwyn and Buncher went on with their respective careers, working on independent films, commercials and music videos for other acts. A few years later, in 2007, Lytwyn ran into Dap-King drummer Homer Steinwess at a Manhattan club and learned the band wanted to make a video for one of its new singles. Lytwyn, Buncher and Roth met to discuss some ideas. For “100 Days,” Lytwyn and Buncher were interested in evoking something similar to a performance on The Mike Douglas Show, which was broadcast from 1961-1982. They studied numerous episodes of vintage music showcases for inspiration, “but the one
