American Cinematographer - June 2008 - (Page 118) Clubhouse News New Members Kramer Morgenthau, ASC and Tom Stern, ASC have been welcomed aboard the Society’s roster of active members. Growing up in Cambridge, Mass., Kramer Morgenthau was introduced to documentaries at an early age thanks to his father, a producer for Boston’s PBS station, WBGH. At the University of Rochester, Morgenthau earned a degree in film studies, and then he settled in New York City, where his first breaks behind the camera came in the documentary arena. In 1995 and ‘96, Morgenthau photographed the Academy Awardnominated Small Wonders for director Allan Miller, and he also earned his first Sundance entry with Joe and Joe, directed by David Wall. After relocating to Los Angeles, Morgenthau notched Emmy and ASC award nominations for his work on the ABC movie The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2005). Morgenthau’s other credits include The Man From Elysian Fields (2002; AC Oct. ’02), Havoc (2005), Fracture (2007) and Feast of Love (2007; AC Oct. ’07). Recently, he completed filming The Express for director Gary Fleder and The Factory for director Morgan O’Neill. Born in Palo Alto, Calif., Tom Stern studied at St. John’s College and Stanford University before throwing himself full-bore into filmmaking. Prior to stepping into the role of director of photography, he worked as a gaffer for 25 years, collaborating with ASC members Conrad Hall, Jack Green, Owen Roizman and Haskell Wexler, among others. For the 1982 film Honkytonk Man, cinematographer Bruce Surtees hired Stern as the gaffer, and Stern has remained a regular of director Clint Eastwood’s crew ever since. Eastwood’s 118 June 2008 Blood Work (2002) was Stern’s first feature as a cinematographer, and since then he has photographed Mystic River (2003; AC Dec. ’03), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Flags of Our Fathers (2006; AC Nov. ’06), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006; AC March ’07) and the upcoming Changeling for the director. Other films in Stern’s oeuvre include The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), The Last Kiss (2006) and Things We Lost in the Fire (2007). He recently completed Faubourg 36. Kemper shared these words: “Part of being a cinematographer is learning the craft, but there is also something which whispers in your ear and tells you to move the camera a foot in a particular direction while putting a face in shadows and a sparkle in someone’s eyes. That talent is innate, but you also need to learn how to work with the director, production designer, cast, crew and everyone else who is part of the collaborative process.” Fallbrook Honors Del Ruth Thomas Del Ruth, ASC recently received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fallbrook Film Festival in Fallbrook, Calif. Prior to the award presentation, Del Ruth participated in a cinematography workshop, where he discussed several of his projects — which range from the series The West Wing and ER to the features The Breakfast Club and Stand by Me — and spoke about the design and execution of visual grammar and its relation to performances. Del Ruth also shared his thoughts about the future of filmmaking and took questions from the audience. Two Cheers for Fraker Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of Rosemary’s Baby, the Lake Arrowhead Film Festival in California and the USA Film Festival in Dallas, Texas, both recently feted the film’s cinematographer, William A. Fraker, ASC, BSC. On April 11, Fraker received an Outstanding Achievement Award at Lake Arrowhead, and on April 24, he picked up a Master Artists Award in Dallas. Both festivals also included a screening of Rosemary’s Baby and a discussion with the cinematographer. I Kemper Settles into Residency Victor J. Kemper, ASC has been named Kodak Cinematographer in Residence during the spring quarter at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. The annual residency program, which was inaugurated by William McDonald in 2000, kicked off this year on April 28 with a screening of The Jerk, photographed by Kemper in 1979 for director Carl Reiner. After the screening, Kemper discussed his work on the film, answering questions posed by McDonald and the audience. Upon receiving the residency, Photo by Douglas Kirkland.
