Academy Offers Free iPad App
The Academy Color Predictor, the
first app created for the general public by
the Science and Technology Council of the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences, is now available for free through
the iTunes App Store.
Created by the Sci-Tech Council's
Solid State Lighting Project Committee, the
app helps filmmakers predict the interaction
of the key ingredients in cinematography:
the lights, camera, filters and the
photographed objects themselves. Users
can change key source light, image sensor
and filter parameters to instantly visualize
color rendering differences and compare
different combinations of elements.
"This app emerged from our conversations with cinematographers, production
designers, costume designers and set decorators who were struggling to predict color
reproduction when switching from traditional incandescent light sources to solidstate lighting," says ASC associate Andy
Maltz, managing director of the Sci-Tech
Council. "After a successful beta test, we're
now offering this app free, for general
consumption, so that all types of content
creators, researchers and students can
benefit from our research."
The Academy Color Predictor is
compatible with iPads running iOS 7. For

Lowel Adds to LED Offerings
The Tiffen Co. has announced two
additions to the Lowel family of LED lights:
the Lowel Prime Location LED and the
Lowel Pro Power LED.
The 1'x1' Lowel Prime Location LED
panel boasts a high-output spread over a
wide 50-degree beam angle. The unit
features a rugged, all-metal housing and a
high IP-65 rating, so the unit can be used in
rain, sand or dust storms. Its AC connections use Powercon AC bridging between
fixtures to reduce the need for multiple AC
outlets. Prime Location LEDs also come with
a choice of V-lock or Anton Bauer Gold

Mount battery plates for DC operation. The
lights are available in high-CRI daylight,
tungsten or bi-color models, and are
dimmable without color shift. A light diffusion front-piece greatly reduces LED multishadow, and additional accessories and kit
combinations are also available.
The Lowel Pro Power LED is a
compact light available in high-CRI tungsten
or daylight color with impressive output and
a wide Fresnel 8:1 focus range. The unit can
light from a greater distance, and its output
is dimmable without color shift. The fixture
works with either AC power or its proprietary DC accessory battery system, which
clamp-mounts to the light stand to improve
balance and stability and can also be used
with a shoulder strap for handheld lighting.
With a number of accessories and mounting options available, the Pro Power LED can
be purchased on its own or in a kit combination.
