Lesnie Teaches in Turkey
Andrew Lesnie, ASC, ACS recently
conducted two seminars while on assignment in Istanbul, Turkey, one at the Mimar
Sinan Fine Arts University Dept. of Cinema
and Television, and the other at Ipek University's Faculty of Cinematic Arts.
With more than 150 international
students in attendance, the sessions
covered lighting faces, choreography and
coverage, and day-for-night photography,
with Lesnie screening clips from his films
and answering questions. He was

LMGA Honors Wexler
Haskell Wexler, ASC recently
received the Humanitarian Award from the
Location Managers Guild of America. The
award, which was presented by actor/director Billy Crystal, was handed out during the
LMGA's inaugural awards ceremony.
Presented by the Greater Fort
Lauderdale/Broward Office of Film & Entertainment, the black-tie event was held at
the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.
The LMGA Awards honor the outstanding
and creative contributions of location
professionals working in film, television and
commercials.
CSC Salutes Drabinsky
ASC associate Cyril Drabinsky,
president and CEO of Deluxe Entertainment
Services Group Inc., received the Bill Hilson
Award from the Canadian Society of Cinematographers during the CSC's awards
gala, held recently in Toronto's Westin
Harbour Castle. Now in its 41st year, the Bill
Hilson Award is named for the individual
who created film quality-control procedures
during his tenure at Canadian Broadcasting
American Cinematographer

Corp. The award is presented for outstanding contributions to the development of
Canada's motion-picture industry.
"The switch from photochemical
processing to file-based digital technologies
was a seismic upheaval for our industry,"
says CSC President Joan Hutton. "Cyril
Drabinsky was one of the first to see and
seize this new technology's potential to
open new doors and vistas for filmmakers.
Cyril altered the postproduction process and
our concepts of postproduction forever. He
is a visionary."
"Deluxe Entertainment is all about
quality and standards when it comes to
serving the motion picture and television
industries," says Drabinsky, a Toronto native.
"I couldn't be more honored to accept
this prestigious award on behalf of a great
team serving the Canadian production
community."
Ross Joins Arri
The Arri Rental Group recently
announced that ASC associate Dana Ross
has been named its new international
marketing executive. Reporting to Arri
Rental Group CEO Martin Cayzer, Ross will
represent the company in Los Angeles,
managing and developing relationships
within the industry to continue the growth
of the business and brand.
Ross, a film-industry veteran with
more than 35 years of experience, was
previously director of creative relations for
Technicolor. "I am delighted to join Arri and
take on the challenges the role will bring,"
says Ross. "The company is well recognized
for renowned customer service and highly
respected products, but there is considerable scope to substantially expand the
market share of the company's rental operation. This opportunity has become the next
chapter in my career, and I look forward to
playing a key role in taking the Arri Rental
Group to the next level."

"Mimar Sinan University has one of
the biggest film archives in Turkey, and part
of the curriculum requires students to do
hands-on restoration work," Lesnie notes.
"What an amazing and unique way to
teach young people to have pride in their
country's film history.
"I come from one of the youngest
cultures on the planet, and these students
live and work in one of the oldest," adds
the Australian cinematographer. "They are
surrounded by some of the most inspiring
art and architecture, so they will never be
short of inspiration."
Arri Turkey provided an Alexa for the
seminars, which were organized by Ali
Akdeniz of Anka Films.
