Bombell. "The streets of Mumbai are so
narrow and crowded that typical trucks
won't work - you need a smaller footprint," Bombell explains. "Jessica took the
reins and designed how shelving could go
into smaller vans, had someone do drafting
using CAD software, came up with dimensions and passed the data to the Indian
construction crew. We had six vans built to
spec, two for loading and four for cameras,
to transport gear between different locations. The vans were 21⁄2 feet off the
ground, and it took days to get the ramps
we needed to push the carts onto them.
So, for the first week or so of shooting, we
had to lift the carts, which were about 350
pounds each, into the vans at the end of
each day or when making a location move.
It was very physically challenging. Our base
camp sometimes required us to park the
vehicles six or seven blocks from where we
were shooting, and we'd be pushing carts
those six or seven blocks in 90°F heat at 6
a.m."
One of the advantages of working in
India at the height of summer was that the
filmmakers could easily capture day exteriors per the script at an efficient pace, as
Gillespie was fanatical about planning
shooting days around the sun's path. In a
bow to the pressure caused by the heat, he
pushed an ultra-fast pace each day, almost
in documentary fashion. This also reduced
lighting needs for most of the India
sequences. "The lighting gear in India was
traditional Fresnel lights and HMI Pars, and
we didn't use much lighting for day
sequences," says gaffer James Plannette.
"The overall goal was to make the lighting
as invisible as possible. The different looks
were generally created with production
design and location choices. But I did have
14 electricians, the biggest crew I've ever
had; the equipment was heavier than any
I'd used before; and some equipment we
take for granted, like a Condor, wasn't available. But the crew was very good and had
a great attitude."
For a key night sequence in a dormitory, where the two main contenders to win
the Million Dollar Arm challenge, Dinesh
(Madhur Mittal) and Rinku (Suraj Sharma),
converse while the others sleep, the filmmakers had to improvise a solution when
they learned Condors would not be avail-
