Cameron says. "In the morning, I could
lay the AirWalls back and get an extra 45
minutes of sunlight, and then at the end
of the day we could drop them on the
other side and get an extra 45 minutes of
natural sunset. It was a challenge because
I had to make sure we could turn the
ships to match light. When we first
started looking at the idea of doing bluescreen, everyone thought the screens
would be fixed against a big wall. But
because of the size of the ships - 120
feet - and the directors' preference for
wider spherical lenses, I knew we would
require massive bluescreen coverage. The
challenge was to build the arenas in a way
to spin the boats to chase backlight
throughout the day."
Though Cameron was originally
gunning for anamorphic, the filmmakers shot the movie spherical using seven
Arri Alexa XT cameras, which were
framed for the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and
recorded in Open Gate mode in order to
maximize pixel resolution in the
ArriRaw format. According to 1st AC
Trevor Loomis, production relied
primarily
on
17.5mm-100mm
Panavision Primo V prime lenses, as
well as 19-90mm PCZ (T2.8), 24275mm 11:1 SLZ11 (T2.8) and 135-
