Nolan: I did not, no. Just the sun.
Behrens: And the same was true
for Damien [Mander, who heads
the International Anti-Poaching
Foundation], right?
Nolan: Yeah. That one was tough
because we weren't technically allowed
to be filmmakers in Zimbabwe. So we
slimmed everything down and said we
were tourists - wealthy tourists with
lots of toys. A guy opened my drone case
at one point and said, 'What is this?' I
said, 'It's an aerial selfie device.' And he
was like, 'Okay,' and closed it back up.
[Laughs.] So, yes, no lighting, but I
found myself taking mosquito nets and
stuff like that to use as diffusion for
interviews. It was the principle of
constant problem-solving in the field.
It's always nice when it's a 4-by-4 with a
duckbill and a C-stand, but sometimes
it's a poster board with some gaff tape
and a chair.
What led you two to shooting
documentaries?
Nolan: Actually the first documentary I had the opportunity to work
on was Racing Extinction. I had done
narrative work before that. The [documentary] workflow was a big thing for
me, the fact that you're constantly problem-solving on the fly, that there's no
correct answer, there's just the best
answer that you can create. I really enjoy
thinking on my feet and needing to be
super-present all the time. Slim teams
and high impact is always the goal.
I've always loved filmmaking. I
decided in middle school that that was
what I was going to do, and I was very
fortunate to have parents who said, 'We
don't know anything about this, but go
for it.' I love making people laugh and I
love making people feel, but I realized
there was a missing component for me
when people stood up and left at the end
of the movie. To me, documentary is like
the first piece of an evolved action.
Hopefully we're putting out content that
will impact people as much, if not more,
after the film as during it. Trying our best
to do that in a very fair, unbiased and
truthful manner is the beautiful challenge. Sometimes what you want to get
