Leica Thalia Gets
LPL Mount
CW Sonderoptic has
announced that the Leica
Thalia large-format cine
lenses will soon be available in Arri's new LPL
mount. With the addition
of the LPL mount, the
Thalia lenses - which are
currently available in PL and Arri XPL mounts
- will be compatible with Arri's Alexa LF
camera.
The LPL-mount versions of the Leica
Thalia lenses will include electronics for
metadata, and will be swappable on existing
PL or XPL lenses. "The idea is to maintain the
Thalias' already future-proof performance,"
says ASC associate Seth Emmons, director
of communications for CW Sonderoptic.
"By supporting LPL we are showing our
customers that these lenses are going to be
ready to work on every camera in their
inventory."
The Leica Thalia primes offer a
consistently cinematic look and feel
throughout the range of nine lenses, from
24mm to 180mm, with an image circle of
60mm. The lenses are lightweight and
compact, with a matched front diameter of
95mm. The always-round iris design creates
a bokeh that is smooth, distinct and full of
character. Although these are not vintage
lenses, the Thalias offer many of the characteristics that have led cinematographers to
pair older lenses with digital sensors. They
are smooth, forgiving, and clear without
being overly sharp.
The LPL mounts are expected to start
shipping in Q3 2018 with prices yet to be
determined.

Blackmagic Design Upgrades
Pocket Camera
Blackmagic Design has announced
the all-new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema
Camera 4K. The camera features a full-size
4⁄3 HDR sensor with native 4096x2160
resolution and 13 stops of dynamic range.
The full size of the 4⁄3 sensor is designed to
match MFT lenses so the crop factor is
greatly reduced, giving customers a
wider field of view. It also features dual

native ISO, with up to 25,600 ISO for lowlight shooting.
Features of the Pocket Cinema
Camera 4K include an MFT lens mount,
large 5" touchscreen monitor, 10-bit ProRes
and 12-bit raw recording, 3D LUTs, four
built-in microphones, mini XLR audio input
with phantom power, Bluetooth wireless
camera control, and HDMI on-set monitoring output.

composite,
the body of
the Pocket Cinema
Camera 4K is strong and light. The handheld design features a multi-function grip
with buttons and dials that allow fast access
to functions such as recording start/stop, still
photos, ISO, shutter, aperture, white
