was also thinking about how we shot
Hedwig's different timelines: Kodak for
one, Fuji for another, and then in Berlin
we did silver retention - [aka] bleach
bypassing - push-processing and overexposure, so each look supported a
different storyline.
For How to Talk to Girls, we have
these two groups of characters: the aliens
and the punks. Sandy Powell designed
the beautiful alien costumes, and
production designer Helen Scott's alien
hotel environment really stands apart
from the gritty, nasty and real 'punk'
South London environment. It got me
thinking - if we do shoot digitally, then
we could use the clean, grain-free Super
35mm format for the aliens' heightened
reality, and when we're in the punk
world we'll use the Super 16 extraction.
It's easy too, because we don't have to
change the camera, just our framing and
the lenses.
So the disappointment of losing
Super 16 film was a blessing in disguise,
because we're actually enhancing the
story by shooting in two digital formats,
which is something that John is very
comfortable with - we had done the
same extraction thing on 35mm film
stock for a Scissor Sisters video.
Did you use the same set of
lenses for the Super 35 and Super 16
sequences?
DeMarco: Mostly, we used
35mm-format lenses, [including] a set
of Zeiss Super Speed T1.3 MKIII
primes, an Angenieux 24-290mm T2.8
Optimo, an [Arri/Fujinon] Alura 1880mm T2.6 and a Zeiss 15.5-45mm
LWZ.2 T2.6. John and editor Brian
Kates loved it when we used the 35mm
lenses on the Super 16 extraction,
because if they wanted to reposition or
'steal' something, there was usable
imagery from corner to corner. But
35mm-format lenses don't go much
wider than 12mm or 14mm, so when we
were shooting wide shots in the Super
16 extraction, I had first AC Fran
Weston carry a [Super 16-format lens
package] - a set of Arri/Zeiss Ultra 16
T1.3 primes and my Canon 7-63mm
Super 16 T2.6 zoom - which [don't]
