or 5,600K, your image came out very
red, green or blue. Modern film stocks
and [digital] cameras are designed to
better handle the difference between
color temperatures, so I tried to 'hyperventilate' the colors quite a bit.
Can you provide a specific
example?
DeMarco: At our South London
record-store location - filmed in
Sheffield - we went for this greenish
look, using cool-white fluorescents, and
we tweaked the camera settings a bit to
enhance that green. And you can see the
shop owner behind the counter has a
little tungsten lamp on him, so you really
notice the difference between the colors.
How did you tweak the camera?
DeMarco: If I wanted the coolwhite bulbs to look more green, I'd
shoot an 18-percent gray card with
tungsten light and have the colorist
correct for that, and then up the green
channel in-camera.
Did you use any special filtration
in front of or behind the lens?
DeMarco: Just Tiffen ND filters
and Schneider [True-Pols].
When you're collaborating with
gaffer Dave Tyler, how specific are
your instructions?
DeMarco: Dave was really happy
to have significant creative lighting
input. We'd done some commercials in
London together, so we have a history.
This time, I told him I was going to be
busy with the director, actors and
cameras, so I would need him to come
up with a few of his own cool ideas for
certain scenes. I let him fill in the blanks,
and then we all worked together to
refine it.
For instance?
DeMarco: For the scene where
the aliens are doing this ritual dance in
their hideout, Dave came up with the
idea to bounce 1K Martin Mac Vipers
off blob-shaped Mylar mirrors affixed to
the ceiling. That was all Dave with his
bag of tricks from the hundreds of
commercials he's done. I added smoke
to the room to enhance the kinetic
lighting. He was very much a creative
