Did you shoot much on location, given that so much has changed
in the look of South London since
the late Seventies?
DeMarco: Our offices were
based out of Ealing Studios in West
London, but we only did prep work
there. We were either in parts of
Croydon, South London, or the old
Wapping Hydraulic Power Station -
a beautiful, late-1800s Jules Vernelooking place, where Nicole Kidman's
'Boadicea Queen of the Punks' lives
and does shows with her punk
acolytes. We were in Richmond, in
Southwest London, which is where
Mick Jagger lives; that's where the
aliens' hideout is - a defunct [facility]
for shell-shocked World War I vets.
But you can't find old, f---ed-up punk
London even in Croydon nowadays,
so we had to go 21⁄2 hours north to
Sheffield, an old urban steel city. That
was our Croydon, where we filmed in
the estate houses - what we call
'projects' in the U.S. - these amazing
Brutalist tower blocks with bridges
going from building to building.
They're like WWII bunkers - indestructible, gray cement, and it had this
late-1970s, South London, dreary, nofuture kind of feel.
