American Cinematographer - July 2017 - 22

Pro Perspective
Paul Cameron, ASC:
Sleep Tight
Paul Cameron, ASC might not
immediately come to mind when you're
thinking "down-and-dirty guerrilla-style"
filmmaking. After making a name in
commercials and music videos, the cinematographer burst into the feature scene
with Gone in Sixty Seconds (AC June '00)

and has since built a visually diverse résumé
that includes such titles as Swordfish (AC
March '01), Man on Fire, Collateral (AC Aug.
'04) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men
Tell No Tales (AC June '17). Despite the big
budgets of those projects, one of
Cameron's favorite tricks speaks to the
guerrilla filmmaker in all of us.
"There's a ton of different types of
diffusion available, but I'm very simple
with my choices," the cinematographer

told AC when discussing his work on
the pilot for HBO's Westworld (see

down). "I like Hampshire Frost, Opal - and
a bedsheet.
"I got the bedsheet idea from working with Tony Scott," Cameron continues.
"He loved it. You can travel anywhere in the
world, and chances are the hotel you're
staying in has a white bedsheet; you pull it
off the bed and bring it to work!
"I like [to position] the bedsheet at
the edge of the frame, and I put light
through it," he adds. "It's very soft, lighter
than muslin and with better transmission.
We've laughed about thread counts before
and differences in quality of sheets, but
really they're all pretty close. It's a great tool
and it's always close at hand."
If you want to take it further, fitted
sheets can "snap" around a speed-rail or
PVC frame. Straight sheets can be quickly
grip-clipped or taped over an open doorway, turning an exterior-facing door into a
3'x8' soft light.
An alternative to the bedsheet is the
white vinyl shower-curtain liner. It's not quite
as easy to snag from the hotel, but it can be
found on the cheap at nearly any drug store
or local hardware store.
Next time you're about to drift off
to sleep in your hotel room, remember
that you're snug and cozy in the next
day's grip soft-goods. Just make sure you
return the sheet to the hotel when you're
done.
