Our A-camera operator, Philip Sindall, was fantastic, as were [B-camera/Steadicam operator] Simon Baker and [Ccamera operator] Luke Redgrave. I’ve worked with Simon and Luke on countless films.” Lloyd’s desire to keep the camera moving necessitated a great deal of heavy grip equipment and many more crane days when the production traveled to Greece. Partly for this reason, Zambarloukos kept the same crew with him for the entire shoot. “I would love to have used a lot of the Greek crew I worked with on Opa! [2005], but the nature of this film was that we did 10 weeks in England and then went to Greece, and the crossover wouldn’t have worked with a different crew on location.” Just getting equipment to the more inaccessible locations proved tremendously difficult. “Despite 25 years of experience, I genuinely wondered how we were going to do it after seeing some of the Greek locations,” says McCarthy. “Sometimes we’d end up with 20 or 30 people spending half a day carrying cranes into very tricky locations.” In particular, McCarthy recalls mounting a GF16 crane with a Libra remote head on a fishing boat. “It was used for boat-to-boat and boat-to-shore footage. We ran the crane out about 40 feet, which was as far as we dared. I was lucky to have such a fantastic team, because this was among the most challenging productions of my career.” For location lighting, Zambarloukos relied largely on the powerful Greek sunshine, supplementing it only when necessary. “We used 18Ks and some MoleBeams, but mainly we used UltraBounce, a Director Phyllida Lloyd chats with her actresses while an assistant runs tape for focus. This same concern motivated Zambarloukos’ decision to shoot with Panaflex Millennium XLs rather than the heavier Millennium.
