The bullet-time shot of Tonto
during the bank robbery is an amusing
anachronistic touch. How did you
achieve that?
Bazelli: We needed six cameras
and precisely matched lenses for the
camera array, so we used six Red
Epic-Xs and 21mm spherical
[Panavision] Primos and converted the
shot to anamorphic in post. [Ed. Note:
The Epics captured at 120 fps in 5K
2.4:1. Footage was recorded at 8:1
compression to Red SSD Cards.] That
was a big lighting job because we
needed to shoot 120 fps and balance the
bank interior and exterior. Because of
that shot, the bank was designed to have
a lot of windows and two sets of doors,
and we surrounded it with 18K
ArriMaxes. We rated the Epics at 500
ISO so there wouldn’t be any
noise/grain overlay when the frame was
frozen.
Red’s, the saloon that’s housed
in a tent, is one of the more unusual
interiors. How did you approach that?
Bazelli: That set was built
onstage, and its outer structure was
entirely canvas, which made lighting a
challenge not only because of rigging,
but also because we learned fairly late
that we couldn’t use propane gas lamps
because they presented a fire hazard.
